Sanctuary Cities: Cities or towns in support of policies that limit authorities involvement in legal issues pertaining to undocumented workers.

Rick Perry: Republican, Texan, first elected governor in 2000.  Know for his staunchly conservative views. In 2005 he signed an amendment banning same-sex marriage. Since announcing his run for the republican nomination, Perry has been very vocal about his desire to abolish sanctuary cities.

Big Business benefits from undocumented workers: Undocumented workers will work longer hours for less pay. Due to fear of deportation, undocumented workers are far less likely to speak up about mistreatment or ask for a raise.

States Containing Sanctuary Cities: There is no definite way to identify a city or a community as a sanctuary city. In the United States, however, over 50% of states contain at least one city that is considered to be sanctuary city.

1. General pardon for offenses, especially political offenses, against a government, often granted before any trial or conviction.
2. An act of forgiveness for past offenses, especially to a class of persons as a whole.
3. Forgetting or overlooking of any past offense.

The Utah Compact: Written by Karen Johnson, a former Arizona Senator. The Utah Compact touches on five main issues in regards to illegal immigration.  It states that undocumented immigration is federal issue and therefore should be handled by the federal government. The Utah Compact has received heavy criticism from many ultra conservatives. One big criticism is that the Utah Compact is too soft, and may lead to a rise in undocumented workers. Another criticism, is a claim that, Utah State’s Congress members received heavy pressure from the LDS church to vote yes on the new immigration guidelines. The LDS church itself, however, claims not to stand on either side on the issue.
